Quickie #6

  • 0
Wanted to post this before the holiday but end up doing it at 2nd week of new sem lol.

Few weeks ago, Sasha Saidin, a member of a girls group bla bla became a curator for @twt_malaysia. So it's kinda...I dunno, supposedly cool or awesome (?) to have an artist (or former artist?) to wish you luck for your exam haha.

And after finally done with the exams, I did this. Haha. Finally get a taste of what it feels like to be tweetlimit-ed.God it was hard to get tweetlimit-ed.

Long overdue post (with pictures)

We bought a Polaroid camera for Illy's birthday last year.

A shop around Camp Shezar.

Mum sent this pic of mango months ago. I miss eating mango everyday back at home :(

A lady wearing a Spongebob shawl. Heh.

Moved to a new house.

Took us 3 days (or more?) to tidy this up completely.

A very, very useful shoe design in case of facing a pervert. A good, hard kick at the balls will do wonders to him. Heh.

My haul at this year's Cairo International Book Fair. Finally got the chance to go there :D I am a happy kid.

I would love to write more but kinda busy. Will be out in a moment and 16th is our flight to...Hehe, not telling ya :P Just wait till I get back.

Till then, xoxo

I Should Become An Art Student

Like, seriously. I love to draw, albeit not very good at it. And ever since I use Note, I get to do this

and this

and this

and this

and these

Current blog header

Current FB cover photo

I gotta admit, I only did the first one by freehand. The rest, I copied via layering. I used an app called Sketchbook Mobile Express. Thanks to Amad to introduce the app to me.

In case you're wondering, I edited the pictures (to use it as a header/cover photo) using Photoshop. I'm not very good at it, so I can only do very simple stuff. Erase the background, fill in colours, write something using funky fonts, and voila! Just in case you're super noob like me.

Battle of Pantun

Had a bit of 'berbalas pantun' session in twitter. I was obviously bored in class. Gotta admit, the '6 7 makan rempah' one was by Ili. My pantun skill is very, very rusty.

Tried to draw again. Meh.

Race against time

Who will win?

Took this photo at Ramsis Station. We were rushing because there were so many people and they walked at fast pace so we need to go with the flow, or we would be pushed and shoved along the way. I have no idea why I took this photo in the first place. Either I wanted to show how many people were there at that time or how the station has changed over time. I was walking while taking this, so at first I thought the picture will turn out blurry, but I like how the camera managed to focus on the uncle. Admittedly, this is not a very flattering picture. Maybe the composition is off or whatever term you photographers used to describe/comment/criticize a picture. But whatever.

*****

Rushing.

We always find ourselves rushing, trying to win this race against Time. Sometimes, you win. Sometimes, you don't.

I'm on the race too. I almost reach the finishing line, and I'm sprinting towards it. But the thing is, I'm not a sprinter. Not even sure if I'm a runner. Time, on the other hand, is a regular. He could easily overtake me, even at the very last seconds. And the fact that I'm easily distracted is not helping either (for example, I should be studying at the moment since we'll be having a practical exam at 9 AM but surprise, surprise here I am).

So, in this race - Time with his Seconds and me with my studies, who do you think will win? Do I even have a shot?

Till next post :)

Reverse Racism

  • 7
*I hope nobody will be offended (and I'm sorry if there's any) with what I will write*

Sometimes, I think us Sabahans are the ones who are racists.

We thought the West Malaysians still assume we're living in a tree house or something. We thought they still assume we're using boats as main transport or something. Then you will quickly recriminate them of living inside the coconut shell, of not knowing how it really is in Sabah.

Honestly, I haven't met anyone (the West Malaysians) like that (not that I could remember anyway) - and God I hope I will never met someone like that. Hence, sometimes, I wonder, if we're the ones who have been living inside the coconut shell, for thinking that other people still thought about us like that.

You are defensive when they made fun of our dialect, yet, you made fun of their dialects too. So, really, who's being racist here?

Do you get what I'm trying to say?

Maybe, once upon a time, the West Malaysians did think of Sabah like that. But remember, once upon a time, internet is a privilege. Nowadays, everything is within our fingertip. So ask yourself again, is it possible for any West Malaysian to have that kind of mindset about Sabah?

But when you think back, the development of Sabah is not constant. There are still parts of Sabah which are underdeveloped (and maybe do not receive sufficient basic necessities, such as clean water and electricity? I'm not sure and I couldn't be bothered to google it now). So technically, even if there are people who still thought of Sabah like that, they are not entirely wrong either. (refer to the print screens I've attached at the end of this post)

Anyway, now that we're on this topic, I feel the must to write about the dialect.

Sabahan dialect (I'm NOT talking about a specific ethnic's language) is pretty easy (or maybe I'm just biased), compared to Sarawak or Kelantan. I admit, there are certain words that might sound foreign to you, and heck, even I don't know the meaning of some of those words - we said 'tapuk' instead of 'sorok/sembunyi', 'limpas' instead of 'lalu' (update: just knew that 'limpas' is actually a standard Malay word) etc etc (just a quick example). Of course, the dialect differ slightly, depending on one's ethnic and region (but I don't know much about this so I won't elaborate on it).

The pronunciation makes sense too. We spell 'saya' as s.a.y.a and we pronounce it as sa-ya. Not sa-ye (again, just a quick example). And if you watched P. Ramlee's movies, all of the actors speak in standard Malay (saya instead of saye etc etc). This makes me wonder, how did the pronunciation (in West Malaysia) evolve from there to today? Any linguist out there care to explain?

Oh, I don't know if there are still people out there who thought Sabahan dialect is the same as Indonesian dialect. If there is any, let me clear that for you. No, it's not the same. Heck, I can't speak and I don't understand Indonesian dialect. When I was in IIUM (that's International Islamic University Malaysia, or commonly known as UIA, if you don't know that already), my classmates used to talk to me in Indonesian dialect (it was their tone), and the first thing I would say to them was "No, we do not speak like that. That's Indonesian."

Ah, it's 2.30 in the morning and nothing else comes in mind. So I guess I will stop here.

Till next post :)

P/s: Share with us if you have faced such situation

Pp/s: This is kinda what I meant. Read the comments. Here are some snapshots if you are too lazy to click on the link.

New Header

Did it few hours ago using Sketchbook Mobile Express. Thanks to Ahmad to introduce it to me.

I was excited because I *finally* knew how to export the sketches as images. Before, I thought I would resort to print screen forever. Lol.

So anyway, I did mention about changing my whole layout. I'm thinking of using black-grey-white theme. Different shades of grey maybe. Because it's gender-neutral and easy on the eyes.

I did ask Sven's help for the header, but maybe I should do it myself. Lol. (If in the end I really did it by myself, then I'm sorry for taking your time - and troubling you - in the first place, Sven!)

I have a rough idea of how I want the layout to be, but I don't really know how to do it. I need lots of free time to scrutinize the codes of other layouts first. I thought I would get to do it during the spring break, but unfortunately, the break is also our study leave (more like study week) for our end of module 11 exam (cardiovascular system, if you are interested to know).

Speaking of exam, I just realized I still have tons to cover (what's new?), especially Pathology. Never really paid much attention during Patho lectures. Ah well. It's never too late to start.

Till next post :)

Siwa and Matrouh

  • 0
A 2-days trip.

A bit of a bus problem, so we didn't get to see several places. Must go there again, especially Matrouh.

We had a tour guide while in Siwa, but I didn't understand a thing he said (and I believe it's the same for Ili :P) since he spoke in Arabic (the rest who joined the trip could understand Arabic...so...yeah).

Now that both Siwa and Matrouh is off the list, there are 6 places left on my 'Egypt: Must Go' list.

Some of the pictures are taken from Ili. (sorry for the late credits!)

Phone? Tablet?

  • 1
It's Galaxy Note!

(from here on will be referred as Note)

Because I cannot come up with a title of my own, I just used the original tag for the phone (phablet?).

This post is dedicated to Tati. Finally I got myself to blog about it, huh?

Note when compared to Ili's iPod Touch.

I won't be writing about the technical stuff. The specifications and stuff. Because first, I don't have a clue about it anyway and second, because you could simply google it.

Anyway, I think the buzz about Note is the screen. Yes, I admit, it is humongous. At times, I still feel awkward holding it in my hand, let alone holding it when taking a call. But you'll get used to it. In fact, I'm so used to stare at its gigantic screen, I was taken aback by how small my camera's (Nikon S4000) screen is compared to Note's (when I decided to check my camera out, after it had been neglected for quite some time). I thought the bigger screen means less typo for me (not that I've used phones with touchscreen before), but it's either I have fat fingers or using such phones makes you prone to typos. I prefer the latter.

The phone comes with a stylus, or S Pen. Nothing new about a stylus here, except that it has a button which allows you to do some things with different gestures (such as take a print screen, S Memo) (does other stylus comes with buttons too?). The S Pen is a bit thin to my liking though (I'm not sure about the size of other stylus), and I always fear that I would accidentally break it into two. I rarely use it because a) as I had mentioned earlier, out of fear of breaking it, b) out of fear of dropping it, which could lead to losing it and c) it's easier to use my fingers.

Another feature that makes Note such a hit, in my opinion, is the S Memo. You could type or use the S Pen for it. No, it does not feel the same as writing/drawing on a paper. In fact, my handwriting will become much worse when I write on the S Memo. And no, it won't make you better at drawing (sobs). I am amazed (and jealous) by how the artists could draw caricatures with it, while I barely could draw a decent circle with it.

Here are some doodles that have been done on my phone.

Winter Break 2012

*warning! this is a lengthy post with more than 50 photos, because the writer is such a lazy-ass to write about her trip and to break the post into parts.*

The pictures are not necessarily in order.

I dropped my contact lens on the second day in Italy.

Just to get things clear, I only have 1 winter coat (couldn't be bothered to buy and bring more) hence the same outerwear throughout the pics.

Zagazig for the second time

Once arrived, we (Khalilah, Lily, Karl - our musyrif - and me) went to a restaurant called Maxim for dinner. I would rate the restaurant 3 out of 5 stars. 1 star was deducted because the waiter was...in a way...rude. Maybe he thought he was being...I dunno...culture-wise? Smart? But if he was, he wouldn't greet us with 'Ni hao'. Yes, I know we get that all the time, but it doesn't mean I hate it even less. No, I do not have anything against Chinese, I just hate how they couldn't differentiate between a Chinese and Malaysian. That other 1 star was because our food came late - but it's not exactly a fast food restaurant, so there's nothing much I could do about that.

Ze food we ordered

Spent the rest of the night basically just hanging out with them (some of the guys who didn't play DOTA came).

The next day, after going to Mahattah (read: station), we made kek batik, while Lily made 'kuah kacang'. We were still full after eating at Shuk's house (chicken rice and steamboat :D) so we ate them for breakfast instead.

Why the heck do I write in a very detailed way? -__-

Anyway, I learned to play guitar with Lily, and hurt my fingers in the process. It's supposed to hurt if you were a beginner, right? At least I could (almost) play two songs already. The first one is Romanza - or something - and the other one is Giving Up by Ingrid Michaelson. It makes me want to buy guitar even more. Already asked mum if I could, and she said yes, as long as I don't forget my studies. Yay! Maybe I could work on my tone deafness after that. Haha.

Wish me luck :)
